A Better Way to Coach
3m

In this episode of Ask Malaska Golf, Certified Malaska Golf Coach Matt Baker answers a comment from fellow golf professional John Layton, who has been using the M-System with his clients and seeing dramatic improvement.

Matt is not surprised by those results. After working with the M-System for 11 years, he believes it has made him a better instructor by giving him a clearer, easier and simpler way to understand the golf swing—and to communicate it to his students.

For Matt, successful coaching is about creating aha moments. When golfers understand what the club is doing and why, the swing becomes less complicated and improvement begins to happen more naturally.

The breakthrough that changed Matt’s own coaching was learning how to control the clubface. Instead of trying to remove the hands from the golf swing, the M-System gave him permission to use them—and taught him how to use them skillfully.

Matt challenges the common instruction to take the hands out of the swing. His message is direct: use the hands as much as possible, but become good at using them. Hand action is a skill that can be understood, trained and developed.

That understanding began with the throwing action. The motion felt simple, familiar and logical, and it became the foundation for developing the hands-and-arms swing before progressing through the rest of the M-System.
Matt still studies and teaches the system today at Manchester Golf Club, where his students continue to report meaningful results. Those experiences reinforce his belief that the M-System helps golfers improve while also helping instructors explain the swing more effectively.

His message to other golf professionals is clear: learn the M-System, work through it from beginning to end and begin using it with your students. It can elevate the way you coach and give golfers a simpler path to understanding their own swing.

By combining clubface control, skilled hand action and a logical teaching progression, the M-System gives coaches a better framework—and gives their students more opportunities to experience the aha moments that make lasting improvement possible.

“Use the hands as much as you possibly can—but get good at using them. There’s a skill and an art to learning how that motion works.”
