Certified Coach Billy Fitzgerald from the Beverley Country Club in Chicago answers a member question from Andrew Maycock about whether it is the hands or the body that truly control the golf swing.
Billy explains that once your grip is correct, the most valuable skill is developing awareness of how your hands connect to the clubface. If you can feel the weight of the club and sense what the face is doing, you do not need to force the motion. Instead, your body will naturally follow and support the path of the club.
This ability to feel the relationship between your hands and the clubface is what separates golfers who control their shots from those who constantly fight the ball. The hands provide the feedback and direction, while the body’s job is to support and not interfere with that motion. By allowing the body to respond to what the hands are doing, you create a swing that is both more natural and more repeatable.
In this lesson you will learn:
• Why a proper grip is the foundation for straight shots and consistency.
• How feeling your hands control the clubface keeps you connected to the swing.
• Why the body naturally follows when the hands are working correctly.
• How the clubface–ball relationship explains direction and shot outcome.
• Why sensing the momentum of the club helps you stay on a natural swing arc.
He leaves golfers with a simple but powerful reminder:
"Your hands guide the clubface, and the clubface guides the ball. Trust that connection and your body will follow."
