Welcome to another Malaska Golf Live videocast. We've been getting great feedback from these sessions, and we’re going to continue doing more—especially for our members. If you're not already a member, make sure you go to MalaskaGolf.com and get involved.
These webcasts are a great place to learn. You can watch them live, ask questions, and be part of the conversation. I enjoy them because I get to hear your questions and answer them in real time, based on what we’re working on.
Tonight, we’re lucky to have a very good friend of mine joining us. Before I introduce him, I want to share a little backstory. I’ve known his dad, Jerry James, for a long time—probably before Justin was even born. Jerry and I played on mini-tours together, tour events, qualifiers… we even played in a celebrity skins game in California back in the '80s.
What I remember most from that event is the first hole—Jerry absolutely crushed a driver onto the green. I had to match it, so I hit mine down there and played a wedge in. But the next hole was a 340-yard par 4, and I actually made a hole-in-one. Yes, a hole-in-one on a par 4. I have it on tape—so I can prove it happened! Anyway, I don’t know if Jerry ever told Justin about that story, but I had to bring it up.
So, with us tonight is Justin James. If you don’t know who Justin is, you’re in for a treat. Everyone these days is after more distance, and Justin is one of the longest hitters in the world. He won the World Long Drive Championship and has consistently ranked among the top in the world. I’ve had the pleasure of working with him a few times, and I think what we did together helped his game.
What’s especially interesting is that a lot of the concepts from the M-System align with how Justin generates his power. So, without further ado—Justin, how are you doing tonight, pal?
Justin James:
I'm doing great! Things are a little hectic—we’re in the middle of moving, so this side of the garage looks okay, but the other side is a disaster. And if you hear any screaming in the background, it’s just bedtime for the kids. Pure chaos! But all is good.
Mike Malaska:
(Laughs) That’s life, my friend. All part of it.
So, let me ask—when did you really start getting into long drive? When did you decide this was the path you wanted to pursue?
Justin James:
It was right after baseball, around 2015. My dad sat me down and basically said, “It’s time to go. This is a great opportunity.” Golf Channel had just acquired Long Drive from Art Sellinger and was planning to invest time, money, and resources into it. So suddenly, long drive looked like a viable career path. I started training in December of 2015, took third in the world in 2016, and then won in 2017. Thanks to my dad’s coaching, I knew exactly what I needed to do, and I went out and executed.
