A Malaska Golf Member wants to know about the right hand. She explains that several teachers talk about holding the club in your fingers more than the palm of your hand. The member wants to know the upsides and downsides of this.

If it’s not more in your fingers than your palm, it is a downside because you won’t be able to do the lever system and create speed.

If the club is in the palm of your right or left hand, Mike says that’s called putting or maybe chipping. You do that to stop the hinging and unhinging of the wrists when you are putting or chipping. Turning your right hand under also gives you more stability. But if you do that in full swing, you won’t be able to create speed. 

Mike shows us how he holds the club in the fingers of his right hand. He places his left hand on the handle, and the right hand wraps around and over the thumb. Mike reinforces that his fingers are what is holding the club.

Your fingers are where your control and speed are. For full swing, you want it in your fingers! Some people make the mistake of putting it in their fingers and wrapping their hands too far over the top of the club. Your hands hinge back and sit on the thumb.

Mike uses a sports connection with throwing a baseball and how you use your fingers to throw a ball. You use your fingers to hold the club. Again, the club is in your fingers with your palm at the right angle.

THE LEFT ARM

A Malaska Golf Member wants to know some drills so they don’t pull their hands in on the swing instead of extending them.Most teachers who see students come into the ball and pull their arms in call this the ‘dreaded chicken wing.’Mike demonstrates how the chicken wing happens. People think that the answer is to straighten your arms on the follow-through. Mike explains this is not the case; your arms are pulling in because they must. People have more hand-eye coordination than they give themselves credit.What happens is that when people swing back, they don’t push their hips back. On the downswing, their body ends up moving closer to the ball. To hit the ball, they resort to pulling in their arms to get the clubface on the ball. Hence, the ‘chicken wing.’&nbsp;Mike explains the fix! When you swing a golf club, the thing that makes your arms straighten out is when your left hip pushes back and away. By doing this, it throws and accelerates your arms forward.When Mike has students who do the ‘chicken wing,’ he gets them to step back from address and try to hit the ball. They usually miss the first one because their arms pull in. When they hit the ball, their arms must straighten out, and the ‘dreaded chicken wing is gone.’The ‘dreaded chicken wing is an effect of people moving closer to the ball. Once you figure out that if you push your left hip back, your arms will straighten out, and the ‘chicken wing is gone.’

A Malaska Golf Member wants to know about the Malaska Move. Mike explains that it’s really not his move but a move that Joe Nichols taught him. Mike also says that it is a feeling.

Mike’s observation about golf today is that he sees players try to shallow the shaft on the downswing and turn and go on it. For most people who try to shallow the club, their hands will push out in front as they turn, the clubface will be open, and they will have a hard time catching the clubface up to the ball.

Joe wanted Mike to take the club back but noted that the momentum of the club wants the club to fall back away when you change directions. Joe said you must feel like you are tipping the club or pulling the handle down. This will help get the club back in front of you, so you can turn and hit the ball.

Mike says the big thing about the “Malaska Move” is that when you tip the club out, Mike’s right shoulders are moving down and not following the swing around. Doing this is not tipping the club out.

Tipping the club is about getting the club in the correct arc so the club can go and it runs into the ball. If you do this correctly without using your shoulders, the momentum of the club will get out in front of you. This allows you to turn as hard as you can into the ball.

If you let the club fall behind you on the downswing and your body turns too quickly, you get into trouble catching the club up to the ball.

In this lesson, John Lang works with Mike Malaska to address the challenges of playing golf after losing vision in his right eye due to a stroke. As a former right-eye-dominant golfer, John must adapt his swing and develop new techniques to maintain his performance despite issues with depth perception and spatial awareness. The lesson focuses on helping John modify his head positioning, adjust his approach to the game, and utilize targeted drills to build consistency and confidence.The session begins with John explaining how his vision loss has affected his ability to gauge depth and follow the ball, particularly under certain sunlight conditions. Master Your Swing After Vision Loss

A Malaska Golf member noticed that Mike Malaska’s grip in a video on YouTube from five years ago appeared to be weaker than it is now. Mike concedes that is probably true. His grip changed from his natural baseball style grip, where he first started throughout his professional career, but is back to where he first began. His grip also appears weaker than it is because Mike pushes his hands forward at setup so that the club shaft is in line with his hands and arms. 

Mike then discusses how to make the golf swing work. He uses an oversized golf club to illustrate this. The clubface is still square to the ball on the backswing, and your wrists are starting to hinge. At the top of the swing, or as Mike likes to refer to it, the transition point, your left arm rotates, tipping the club out on the downswing. Your club returns to a 90-degree position of the swing arc, pushing your left leg out, and the clubface runs into the ball. The clubface stays the same on the follow-through side while your wrist rehinge. 

Mike describes the hand action in his golf swing at impact. The left hand is like a chopping action, and the right hand is a throwing motion. The stronger Mike is in his grip, the more he can feel this motion because it’s not about twisting your hands at impact.

CURVING THE BALL: FACE CONTROL

It is important that you can feel the weight in the club and clubhead throughout the swing. To do this turn the club upside down. Hold the club head end. Swing it a few times. Then turn it back to normal and swing. You will be able to really feel the weight in the club and club head and where it is in the arch. Then do the same thing but this time let the weight or force in the club and clubhead make your wrists hinge unhinge and rehinge. You are not forcing it. 

FEEL WEIGHT

Mike Malaska is working with former MLB pitcher Garrett Richards. In this video lesson, he is showing Garret the sports connection between baseball and golf.Mike gets Garrett to swing with a baseball bat and wants him to feel what his left hand does when it releases on the follow-through. Mike comments that Garrett’s left wrist doesn’t twist when he swings a baseball bat. It is the same when he swings a golf club and hits a ball. Your wrists should not twist, but that’s what is currently happening in his golf swing.&nbsp;Mike said Garrett would hit grounders if he rolled his wrists with a baseball bat. Mike holds the bat with Garrett and demonstrates the hand and wrist action, which is the same as the golf swing.Garrett now goes back to his wedge, and Mike adjusts his grip. He also shows him how to release the toe of the club on the follow-through. It goes up, not over.Mike just wants Garrett to make an easy 100-yard shot. He does, and Mike says that Garret didn’t hook the ball. Mike explains to Garrett that he had so much twist in his arms that it was hard for him to be consistent. However, Garrett was athletic enough to swing the club from the inside and to catch his hands and clubface up. Being a few degrees off in having the clubface square at impact can cause miss-hits.Mike gets him to hit the ball again, imagining him hitting a baseball bat with his left hand. It's more of a chop action with no twist. Garrett hits an awesome shot. Mike laughs and tells him how easy it will be to hit it straight. Garrett says it feels like hitting a cricket bat and hitting the ball square.Mike shows how the clubface works, demonstrating the swing path with Garrett’s club. The clubface is open relative to the target line; however, it is 90 degrees to your body on the swing arc. What the club doesn’t do is rotate and turn over. Garrett describes it like a pinball flipper. Mike explains this is how the Tour Players swing. The clubface hardly rotates relative to their swing arc.Mike tells Garrett that his right hand is his pitching hand, and he is aiming at the ball to throw it. His left hand is like hitting a baseball. Garrett describes to Mike that he feels like he is reaching up and ringing a bell on his backswing. He says that it feels like a more direct path up and directly to the ball than swinging out and hoping the timing is right back to the ball.Mike wants to work with Garrett on his short shots, which will help him significantly improve his short game and also his long game.&nbsp;Mike is trying to get Garrett to trigger something his body already knows how to do, and he says this is where golf went wrong. The golf industry decided to turn the clubface down because they didn’t want the ball going up in the air. This came about because of how golf started historically: the balls were expensive, the players wore suit coats, and it was windy in Scotland. As the game progressed, it became less important to keep the ball low.The new balls that players have used in the last 15 years don’t spin very much. You have to hit the ball higher. You have to stop the ball with ‘angle of descent,’ than you do with spin. Therefore, all the rotation of the arms and turning the hands down is gone. Mike explains that the new Tour Players swing so fast, but the clubface doesn’t rotate much. They can hit the ball pretty far because the clubface isn’t twisting.Garrett feels that what he is doing now with Mike with his swing is compressing the ball versus hitting the ball. Mike says that this is awesome.Mike explains to Garrett that a good way to get the correct grip is to hold the golf club like he is holding and swinging a baseball bat. Adjust the thumb slightly and lower the club down behind the ball. This is the correct grip you should have. Mike says that he had this grip coming from baseball, and after college, he was talked into another grip by his instructors, which ruined his career. With the grip Mike had, they said he wasn’t a golfer and had a shut face with a throw release. The irony is that’s what everyone wants today.Mike works with Garrett’s grip again to get it on correctly, and he talks about force going into the hand. Mike wants Garrett to make small pitch shots. Mike notices his ball flight is now lower, with a slight draw. This is what Garrett wants.Again, Garrett says it feels like hitting a cricket bat. Mike says he has never heard that before but says to Garrett that if that is what it takes to get a feel to hit the golf ball correctly, then to go with it.

This session emphasizes understanding the pendulum motion of the golf swing and how different shots require catching the ball at various points in that motion.
Key to chipping is realizing that the ball gets airborne due to the loft of the clubface, not by lifting it. Chipping is essentially "off-green putting" with minor adjustments in setup, such as moving the ball slightly back and leaning forward, to catch the ball on a descending stroke. The line of compression remains consistent, with the right arm and hand driving the shaft through the ball for clean contact.
Pitching introduces additional wrist action, focusing on flexion and extension to control trajectory. Players practice one-arm pitch shots to develop a feel for clubface control and how wrist angles influence loft. This foundational drill helps ingrain proper mechanics and build confidence in shot-making.
Chipping and pitching are critical for mastering trajectory and precision. Golfers are encouraged to spend significant time practicing these tasks, as they lay the groundwork for more advanced aspects of the game. The concepts taught here integrate seamlessly into all parts of the swing, providing a solid base for continued improvement.

Hi, my name is Matt Baker, and I'm a Malaska Golf Certified Coach based in the UK. This is a great question from Russ John. His question is whether you should hold the angle in the right wrist at impact or throughout the swing.The answer is no, you shouldn’t forcibly hold that angle. Doing so creates tension and can cause you to lose speed and power by dragging the handle through impact. Instead, you want your wrist to hinge and unhinge naturally, with proper timing.At impact, there should still be a slight flex in the right wrist, but after hitting the ball, the momentum of the club will cause the right arm to extend and form a straight line, followed by the wrist hinging up. This slight wrist flex at impact is due to correct use of the club's momentum, and it's all about timing the hinge and unhinge properly.A key tip is to practice the pivot drill, which helps time everything correctly. Some golfers tend to stop their hips, releasing the wrists too early. By tying the swing to proper body movement—pushing the hips back and away from the target—you can create the right release at the right time for a solid, compressed shot.Instead of focusing on holding the angle, work on pushing the left hip back and through. Practice with smaller shots to get the feel, ensuring the wrists hinge, unhinge, and rehinge, along with the proper hip movement. This will help you strike the ball cleanly and generate more distance.

TECHNIQUES TO IMPROVE YOUR SHORT GAME

Learning to play golf is about how to accommodate uneven lies. There are more uneven lies on a golf course than flat lies. Even fairways that look relatively flat have slopes, and the more you make little adjustments to compensate, the better you will become.

There are two essential things to understand when it comes to uneven lies. First, you must ensure that your body is perpendicular to the ground as if you were hitting off a flat lie. If you are on a downhill lie, your body should tilt forward. 

Most people on a downhill lie tend to lean back when they try to hit the ball. Your club will bottom out early when you try to make your swing. Make sure you are getting your shoulders even relative to the ground. Mike also drops his right foot back because your knee tends to be more up on a downhill lie and in the way of your swing. The more severe the downhill lie, the more your foot goes back.

Second, once you accommodate the lie with your body and stance, make a practice swing to see where your club bottoms out. You will find that the club will bottom out slightly in front of the ball. You will have to adjust your position in your stance so the club will bottom out and hit the ball.

When it comes to playing golf, it’s about adjusting; in this instance, it’s about making those adjustments to the lie and not your swing. A downhill lie will take loft off the face; an uphill lie adds loft; below your feet doesn’t do much, and above the feet, your shot goes to the left.

Remember, on a downhill lie, get your shoulders level with the ground, drop your right foot back and see where your club bottoms out. Set up and go from there.

"Golf is an interesting sport because when you talk to the golfers, they have all these positions they are trying to hit. The most important (or even the only) position that matters is the position of the club at impact.

Why should we use impact as our primary position? In my opinion, we've been teaching the game of golf incorrectly. We have taught from address (setup) to transition (top) to impact. I believe we should have been teaching from impact to transition (top), and back down to address (setup). When we use impact as our starting point and work from impact back, we can start to identify what impact feels like. When I ask golfers to show me where they think they are at impact, the vast majority of them twist their bodies. This is because they have this perception that impact requires a twisting motion of the body.

What is impact position? If you don't understand what impact is, you probably won't have much success in this game. When I set up to the ball and go to my impact position, my lead leg (left) moves the lead hip (left) out of the way. The lead shoulder (left) raises a bit and my trailing shoulder (right) drops. This causes my trailing arm (right) to drop and align directly behind the shaft and now my lead arm (left) is above my trailing arm (right).

What does impact feel like? This drill helps you identify the proper position at impact. Once you can look in a mirror and identify what impact should look like, then you can make some small swings and train yourself on what impact should feel like. As you perform this drill, your swing will get better and it may even change dramatically just because you have a better understanding of impact. By using the Full Swing Impact Drill you will come away with a proper understanding of what impact should look like and also what impact actually feels like."

The last video is the player lesson with retired MLB player Garrett Richards. Mike Malaska works with Garrett on his wedges.Mike wants Garrett to make small pitch shots with a wedge, taking notice of the clubface with just his right hand. Mike makes a small half-swing, hits the ball, and then a half-swing on the follow-through. Mike is also standing on his left foot. What he doesn’t want Garrett to do is open the clubface as he swings the club.Garrett makes a number of shots, and Mike shows him that if he twists the clubface, he will stick the club into the ground.When you start the swing, keep the clubface square and start using the club's bounce to hit the ball. You will still have a pretty good shot, even if you catch it a little behind the ball.Mike now works with Garrett on controlling trajectory, hitting the ball normally, low and high. This is achieved by the angle of the wrist at impact. The most important thing Garrett needs to learn is flighting the ball low.Garrett now adds his left hand, and Mike explains that the left hip and shoulder get more involved. Mike wants Garrett to feel like his left hip and right hand are hooked together when he swings through. He wants him to feel that his left hip makes his arms go forward and his left shoulder goes up and back. This is the same way you hit a baseball.Mike talks about how MLB outfielder Michael Conforto referred to hitting a baseball as blocking. When you step in to hit a baseball, you then start to push back, which throws the bat forward. Mike said that Michael initially slid his legs when he hit the ball. As soon as he started approaching, hitting the golf ball like he would hit a baseball, it was lights out.Mike demonstrates that Garrett needs to hit a pitch shot, and the same motion is used to hit a driver, too. Garrett puts it all together and makes a great shot.Mike summarizes what he has worked on with Garrett and how easy it will be for him to get good at golf. Garrett already has many natural instincts he can apply to baseball and golf.

Practicing the Right Foot Drop Back Drill correctly will allow you to hit a slight draw.

RIGHT FOOT DROP BACK DRILL IDEAL SHOT SHAPE

The Right Foot Back Drill works so well because you can get your hips out of the way, and it gives you the space for your arms to swing down into the ball.

When you drop your right foot back, it makes it easier to time the outside circle of the clubhead with the circle of your center as you go into the ball.

Many Tour Players will drop their right foot back to hit the ball harder. Doing this gets their hips out of the way, gives them more time to hit the ball, and gives them a more significant turn.

Hitting the ball with your right foot back allows you to hit the ball farther and be more consistent. The only downside is that your swing path might might follow your foot line. Whether your feet are open, square, or closed, your shoulders and eye line stay the same.

Moving your feet allows your lower body to do different things, and that’s why players adjust their feet. This lets you do other things with your arms.

The Right Foot Back Drill is excellent; everyone should learn to do it.

The most popular grip is resting your left index finger on top of your right fingers. Do not interlock your fingers.

THE MOST POPULAR PUTTING GRIP

This question comes from a 68-year-old Malaska Golf Member who has had back problems and wants to keep playing and not have similar issues.

Mike discusses that you need to eliminate having side bend. Side bend and twist put a lot of pressure on your lower lumbar spine. The key is to eliminate or minimize that. When Mike swings, there is virtually no side bend. He used to swing where he would hang back and have a lot of side bend. This eventually resulted in Mike having back problems.

First, when you swing, you want your spine angle to stay fairly neutral. It will tilt a little, and after you hit the ball, you will stand up on the follow-through. A mistake is continually staying down as you drive through the ball. Many Tour Players talk about “standing up through the ball.”

Second, you want to match the rotation of your pelvis with your arms. You definitely don’t want to fire your hips in front of you.
Mike pushes his left hip socket as the club descends. His hips appear to rotate, but not as he comes through the ball. There is no twist, he is not torquing his hip, and it is not coming up. Mike’s left hip moves back, and his pelvis is tilting instead of moving up.

When you are rotating, you want to be able to push your left hip back so your pelvis feels like it is rotating with the right side of your body and arm.

If you do these two things, you won’t cause any additional pressure in your lower lumbar spine. The chances of hurting your back are minimal.

HOLDING THE ANGLE

A Malaska Golf Member has been having problems with the mental side of golf and reached out to Mike for some advice on how to get mentally tougher.

The first topic Mike talks about is strategy on the golf course. He doesn't like words such as lay up, go for it, and play it safe. Mike had played with Jack Nicklaus in several events and recalled in one instance that on a par 5, Jack decided to hit a ball short of the green instead of going for it.

Mike quizzed Jack as they were going down the fairway on why he laid up his shot. Jack replied that he didn't lay up. Bewildered, Mike asked what do you call it? Jack's answer was profound; he said that he just changed his strategy.

Jack doesn't like to use words such as lay up or play it safe because those words mean there is danger out there. This leads to anxiety, and Jack wants everything to be positive when he approaches golf. Jack changed his strategy and was very aggressive about the shot he took.

If you are over a shot and feel like you are not committed to hitting it, step back and assess the situation. Don't second guess yourself; just back away and aim at a target where you can be aggressive.

For a par 5, when Mike is in the fairway, he asks himself, can he hit the ball over the green? If this is the case, then Mike isn't going to go for it unless it is a wide-open green.

Mike looks at his lie and asks himself if he had 10 balls, could he hit 7 or 8 on the green? How many would get out of play if he missed the green? If Mike feels confident about his odds, he will probably go for it. If Mike isn't hitting the ball well and his lie is suspect, then it's not worth the risk. Mike then finds a distance to hit, usually about 100 yards, and then he can get onto the green.

Approach the shots with a mindset of strategy rather than thinking of laying up or playing it safe. The key is to find a shot where you are comfortable. What is that shot? There is no right or wrong answer.

Make a practice shot to get a feel of what that looks like and replicate that shot. The biggest problem Mike sees with players is they get up over the ball and start thinking about how they will make the shot. This is something you should have already figured out in your practice swings. It's about duplicating the motion once you decide to swing.

Afterward, assess how well you did or did not hit the ball and learn from that. The key is to review what you had intended to do and get that mental picture before going on to the next shot.

Mike reiterates that it is more about the process than the outcome. Once you start doing this, you will start playing better golf.

Stand The Club Up Drill

Get set up to the ball. Put a band around your hips. Have a friend take a hold of the band and put some pressure trying to pull you into the ball. Then make a backswing. Keep the pressure on the band or even add pressure stretch the band. Then move back to set up with out letting the band pull you closer to the ball. Then finally go to the follow through side doing the same motion.

PITCHING INTRODUCTION

A Malaska Golf Member has an observation about the downswing. He notices that when you change directions, the handle comes down before you twist.Mike Malaska says that this is ideal. One of the worst things you can do is immediately twist your body before the club starts down as you start down on your swing. People struggle with this in the golf swing.A great drill to learn how to feel the arms drop is to set up to the ball with your right foot back, let your arms drop, and run the club into the ball. Your shoulders need to be relaxed in order to do this.When it comes to your full swing, Mike demonstrates the reason the arms drop. Mike starts his back swing; his shoulders are turned, his wrists are hinged, and his club goes up. When he starts to change direction, Mike’s pelvis starts to move a little laterally, and when this happens, his spine angle tilts. When this happens, the shoulders tilt, and your arms will drop. It is what your lower body is doing that makes your arms drop.Again, you want your arms to drop. Many Tour Players move the club handle away and down, and then everything twists into the ball together. One of the worst things you can do is have your body outrun the club. You want your body and clubface to stay together.

Hi, I'm Billy Fitzgerald, a Malaska-certified coach based in Chicago. Chris Downer asks about using a metronome to build rhythm and wonders about the correct beat—whether it's 70, 80, or another tempo. Chris, that’s a great question, because when it comes to rhythm, one thing I notice across the board is how varied it is among the people who come to me for lessons and those I see practicing on the range every day.Typically, the tempo gets faster as the club length increases, with the driver often being the quickest and rhythm sometimes almost nonexistent with the putter. That’s one area where tour players excel—they have consistent rhythm throughout their game. Even if their swing is a bit off, good rhythm can help save their shots. When we lose rhythm, our timing gets thrown off, and the swing can feel different each time.In terms of using a metronome, I recommend starting with the putter. I always emphasize rhythm in putting lessons, as it greatly impacts speed control. I use a simple pattern: “take back, impact, take back, impact.” The exact tempo doesn’t have to match mine—it will vary based on your personality, lifestyle, and natural pace. Some people are naturally slower, others faster, and it’s about finding what feels right for you.To illustrate, if I use my natural rhythm with my putter, I might go “take back, impact” at a comfortable pace. If I try it too quickly or too slowly, it feels off. Finding the right rhythm and sticking with it is crucial. Once you identify your rhythm, you can use a metronome to match the beats, but since rhythm is so personal, assigning a specific number might not be accurate for everyone.Whether I’m using a putter, an eight iron, or a driver, my rhythm remains the same— “take back, impact.” The rhythm doesn’t change, whether it’s for a two-foot putt or a driver. Once you find your rhythm, make it part of your pre-shot routine and use it every time. The best players have the most consistent routines and rhythm, suited to their own feel and personality.In summary, find a rhythm that works for you and keep it consistent throughout your game. Malaska Certified Coach Brian Gott from The Club at Rolling Hills in Golden, Colorado answers a member question from Brendan Pittman about how to create a more consistent putting setup.
 Many golfers set up with the shaft angled away from their forearms, which causes excess face rotation and makes it difficult to return the putter square at impact. Brian explains that the key is to let the shaft become a product of the forearms, producing a simpler, more repeatable motion.
 He demonstrates an easy way to find this alignment: start with the butt of the putter pointing from your sternum, let the head drop naturally, then bend from the waist while pushing your hips back. This positions the shaft so it runs directly up the forearms and through the middle of the back when viewed from down the line.
 When the shaft and forearms are in line, the stroke becomes more stable, the face stays square longer, and you strike the ball more consistently down the target line&mdash;regardless of your height or grip style.

Putter Setup-Shaft in Line

A Malaska Golf Member wants to know how to incorporate the L to L Drill into his full swing.

Mike demonstrates the L to L Drill and then applies that to his full swing. All Mike is doing is extending the backswing and the follow-through of the L to L Drill. He is just adding a little more turn.

If you were to slow the swing down, the positions would be the same as the L to L. The club still hinges on the backswing and rehinges on the follow-through. Most people try to “chicken wing” their arms or do other things because they don’t let the weight of the club rehinge on the follow-through.

Some Tour Players can extend the club more on the follow-through because they are so flexible. They can continue rotating their pelvis at a speed that keeps up with the clubhead. For most players, once their hips stop, the club rehinges.

Again, work the L to L into your swing and recoil the club back to the L position after the swing. This will help you to reinforce what that feels like.

A Malaska Golf Member mentions he is okay, feeling like he is back on the heels of his left foot, his lead foot, as the club goes through the ball.

Mike reassures the member this is correct and what the biomechanics are now preaching in the industry.

You play the game more from your heels than your toes. Mike has talked about this concept in previous videos. Every shot he makes, even pitch shots, his club runs into the ball, and his left leg pushes his left hip back. When this happens, Mike's toes lift slightly off the ground. As the club gets longer and the swing gets bigger, you will find that your toes lift even more.

Initially, when you swing down into the ball, force goes into the ball or the middle of your left foot; then, as you are halfway down on your swing, the force transfers to the heel of your left foot.

Mike demonstrates hitting a small pitch shot, another fuller pitch shot, and then a driver. You can see the left toe lift and force goes into his left heel.

Mike feels this same timing with all his swings. That's the beauty of all the forces around you when you swing. Mike also finds that his driver is the easiest to time the forces affecting the club because it creates the most force on him. It becomes easier to time those forces and make sure the rotation of his body is in sync with his club.

The driver should be the simplest club to time the circular forces. It is the same feeling and timing of the forces regardless of the length of the club. Practice with small shots and build up to your driver.

IMPACT AND FORCE IN YOUR LEFT HEEL

This Malaska Golf Member question is about the Line of Compression and Impact.

Mike explains that 90 percent of his teaching focuses on this concept and how Impact is the only position that counts.

Regardless of the club, you want to maximize the amount of force that gets into the shaft and the back of the ball.

Your right arm must be lined up with the club shaft when the club runs into the ball. It doesn’t matter if you putt, make a chip shot, a pitch, or use your driver; the same applies.

When the club shaft is lined up with your right arm, and when you run the clubface into the ball, it stabilizes the shaft and compresses the ball at Impact. If your arm is a little high when you run the club shaft into the ball, the shaft will give.

When people in the industry talk about the golf swing and about having your hips 23 degrees open and your shoulders a certain way, Mike believes you should first look at Impact. Mike would rather have you run the club into the ball and have a good impact position with their arms.

If you were to slow that down and watch the swing, your hips would be closed to the target line. Others would say that you need to get your hips more open. When you do that, you will begin to twist your hips, and your shoulders will get involved. If this happens and you run the club into the ball, your right arm is now above your left. Photos of Tour Players show that their right arm is below their left at Impact. Their hips are open, but they are highly flexible.

That ensures the Line of Compression, which stabilizes the shaft, and when the club runs into the ball, it compresses the ball. You have all this force with your right arm and shoulder hitting the ball at Impact.

Getting Impact correct with arms, right arm, and the club shaft is important. You will play a lot better golf.

LEARNING TO LOVE PRACTICE

In this episode of Ask Malaska Golf, Certified Coach Matt Baker from Manchester Golf Club in England responds to a question from Russ John about a subtle but important part of the swing: What should your toes be doing? Should they stay completely quiet, or do they have a role?
 Matt explains that during the setup and backswing, your toes and feet should generally stay quiet and grounded. Too much movement or toe-grabbing often signals poor posture or instability.
 When your setup is correct, your balance should be centered, no excessive pressure on the toes or heels. But during transition and impact, things shift. As your body begins to move away from the club and into your lead side, your left toes may momentarily activate as force transfers forward. Shortly after, that pressure moves back into the left heel, and the lower body begins driving rotation. This isn&rsquo;t dancing, it&rsquo;s a natural reaction to movement and momentum.
 Matt emphasizes that toe movement should be minimal and momentary. Excessive motion often means you&rsquo;re losing posture or compensating. Quiet feet and toes, supported by proper posture and body sequencing, lead to a more balanced, powerful swing

YOUR BODY IN MOTION

A Malaska Golf Member says that working on his grip has really helped his golf swing. Mike reinforces that how you put your hands on the club determines how you move through the golf swing and what your hands must do to square the clubface to the ball at impact.

In an ideal world, you want your joints to work as designed, where they are the strongest, and also, you want the least compensation to straighten the clubface at impact. Mike laments that he had the correct grip when he started; however, along the way, coaches talked him out of it, as they thought it wasn't the right way to grip a golf club. Now, Mike is back to gripping the club like he did when he was eighteen.

The member talks about when he put his left hand on the club, his thumb was on top of the handle, but now, it is off to the side. Mike says this is important because your thumb acts as a stabilizer. It doesn't push the club or add force.

For instance, your thumb stabilizes the club at the top of your swing so it doesn't float around. At impact, you hit with the back part of the hand, which faces out. The wrist bows, but the watch face side isn't facing out. That is old-school teaching. The thumb is on the back of the handle supporting the shaft, so when the club hits the ground, the thumb stabilizes in the clubface.

Mike uses the following analogy all the time. Grip a baseball bat and take a swing. The grip at impact for a baseball bat is the same as that with a golf club at impact. There is a sports connect!

Mike shows you how to put a golf grip on a baseball bat. He grips the back with his left hand, and his thumb is on the back of the bat handle. His right hand grips the bat, which is slightly more up than a baseball grip. Mike brings the bat back in front of him and drops it down behind the golf ball.

This is your golf grip! Now you are in a position where your hands are moving in a chopping action when you hit the ball. You would never swing a baseball bat with a bowing action at impact. It is weak, and Mike believes you shouldn't swing like that with a golf club.

Mike notes some players swing like that, but it fights against how the joints are designed and puts your left wrist in a compromising position. You are more prone to injury gripping the club that way.

When you have the correct grip and step up to swing the club, it feels more like a baseball swing. You will find you have more stability in the back of the ball and the shaft.

ESTABLISHING GRIP

Impact is the most important position in the game, but hardly anyone know where it is in their swing.  Watch this video to understand why it is critical.

IMPACT - PART I

A Malaska Golf Member is confused about the left, right, left hit relative to his right foot rotating and pushing the spike of his shoes and rotating into the ground.Mike explains how to do the drill correctly. You start by taking a small swing with the club to the left, then swinging back right, and then starting back to the left on the downswing.As you start the downswing left, your right foot is pushing into the right cleat of your shoe and twisting into the ground. When you do this, it helps the right hip stay back. Most people, when they do this drill, push off on their right hip. When your right hip stays back, your femur starts to rotate inward, which turns your right foot in and the cleat into the ground. This happens automatically if your hip works correctly. If, however, your right hip pushes, then you will be in trouble.Again, the sequencing of left, right, left gets your hip to stay back. Your leg starts to rotate and pushes the heel into the ground and then you hit the ball.Mike demonstrates the swing, and you can see the foot rotate in. It is a natural pattern if you do the sequencing correctly. You also want to work on the foot action.Once you feel it, the hip works, so you tie the two together.

Proper Hip and Foot Action

This drill helps with getting rid of tension. Creating a proper arm swing. First you stand on just your lead foot. You drop your trail foot back and just use your toe for balance. You should be able to swing and not fall off balance. Your arms have to move much more than your body. Then change and use your trail foot only. Then put both feet together and do the same thing. This promotes a free arm swing necessary for especally distance. 

ASHLEY - 3 STEPS TO BETTER ARM SWING

Start with the club in your lead hand. Take your grip then practice swinging the club and hinging unhinging and rehanging your wrists. Very little arm swing. Then change hands do the same thing. Then put the club in both hands. By the time your lead arm gets parallel to the ground on the backswing the wrist should be hinged to form a 90 degree angle between your lead arm and the club shaft. Then swing down hit the ball and duplicate the 90 degree angle on the follow through side buy the time your trail arm is parallel to the ground.

M5 Coaching Series-L To L With Full Swing

As you swing the club on the downswing. You feel like the club head gets to waist high then levels out. Or creates a flat spot in the swing. So if you where actually doing this the club would swing over the top of the ball and not hit it. But because of gravity and centripetal force the club head works down the ball. But you are not helping it down. The club then swings up on the follow through side. This leveling out feeling keeps the correct pressure on the shaft and the club more infront of you body.

This drill teaches you to soften your arms and shoulders and focus on and feel the Lever System in your swing.

SITTING IN A CHAIR DRILL AND HITTING A BALL

First put a dot on the club face on the forth grove from the bottom and in the center of the face. Now set up to the ball holding the club in just your trail hand. Place the dot on the face on the back of the ball. Now roll the ball towards the target. The ball should not slide off the face. This helps you feel impact and how you catch the ball on the face. Then do the same with your lead arm. Then put it together and do the drill with both hands. Great for feeling impact and how to compress the ball. 

ROLL THE BALL ON THE FACE - WEDGE

This Malaska Golf Member wants to know what you do on the backswing after hinging your wrists.

Mike Malaska says you must be careful to avoid getting too segmented in your swing; instead, think of it as a blend of motions.

Swing the club slightly forward, then start the club back and toss the momentum backward. When you hinge your wrists on the backswing, your left arm is parallel to the ground, your shoulders are 90 degrees, and force is in your right leg. Once you reach this point, your arms go up and down.

It’s not just about shoulder turn, although some players feel that. Mike feels a more up-and-down motion after the wrists hinge. This up-and-down action also helps load the ground, and Mike goes on the downswing.

When do all these motions all sync out? There isn’t necessarily a right or wrong way to do it. Mike’s wisdom is that if you add tension to the equation, then don’t do it.

Start with the club out in front, then push back and let the club swing and hit the ball. The reality of the swing is that your shoulders, arms, and body are moving at different speeds. Nothing is traveling at the same rate, but there is a blend of those circles. A combination of those different swing arcs makes up the swing.

Mike talks about how players feel connected and together. What does that mean? Mike describes this as a feeling, and you must be careful with what you do with it.

In summary, the swing isn’t tight and too position orientated. Just toss the club back and let the arc of the different circles work together in your swing.


BLENDING ARM SWING, WRIST HINGE AND BODY TURN

Malaska Certified Coach Brian Gott from The Club at Rolling Hills in Golden, Colorado answers a question from Parker Shellmeyer about where the hands should move during shallowing in the downswing.
Brian explains that shallowing isn&rsquo;t about dropping the club behind you or forcing the hands out toward the ball. Instead, it&rsquo;s about learning how to let the hands work down and in while the momentum of the clubhead moves out. This motion allows the shaft to shallow naturally as the body transitions back into the lead side.
He emphasizes that this is an exaggerated feeling drill, not a literal move that happens at full speed. As the player transitions, the lower body shifts into the lead side, creating a natural side bend that helps the arms drop into position. The key is to feel the hands move closer to the chest while maintaining spacing &mdash; not pulling them tight into the body.
To train the sequence, Brian recommends rehearsing the motion slowly: shift pressure into the lead side, let the arms fall, and feel the hands move down and in as the clubhead shallows. Once that rhythm is built at slower speeds, it naturally repeats in the full swing without conscious effort.

Shallow The Club Naturally

According to Mike Malaska, the path your arms swing on is directly influenced by your eye line. Day 12-Control Swing Path With Your Eyes

This fitness exercise uses a cord to perform upright rows. 

Mike takes one cord and steps on it. Holding the handle with the other hand, he pulls it up to his shoulders, ensuring they are pinched backward.

Lift the cord up and down, which doesn’t require a lot of tension. This exercise aims to strengthen and loosen and get the blood flowing in your shoulders.

Many ideas or concepts about the swing have really caused a lot of confusion. Many times what you see or what you think you need to do. Is not what is actually the cause. If you understand these concepts and what is actually happening the game or the swing becomes much less complicated.

Foot action cannot be overstated.  This is where your power comes from.  The more you can sequence this out in your swing, the more consistent and balanced you will be.

The one concept that everyone should learn from Joe Nichols, Mike Malaska’s mentor, is the lever system.

Joe would make his students practice the Looping The Club Drill. You would push the handle of the club down on the backswing, and the clubhead would go up and make a circle on the downswing and the follow-through. The club would go up, under, hit, and around and back. It was like making a figure 8.

Joe Nichols was big on the handle of the club and wanted you to feel like, as you took the club away, you pushed the handle down. This would make the clubhead go up and not behind you, as most people do. 

The weight of the clubhead would go up and down and into the ball. Again, you make a slight loop with the club relative to your hands.

If there is any drill you should learn from Joe Nichols, it is the Looping The Club Drill, which works on the lever system.

JOE NICHOLS LOOPING THE CLUB

In this fifth episode of the Malaska Golf Player Lesson, Mike Malaska and players Jeff Coburn and Jeff Krull move from the tee into the fairway for one of the most practical lessons in golf&mdash;how to hit solid fairway shots with consistent contact and the right club selection.
 Standing just inside 145 yards, Mike walks both players through the decision-making process that most golfers overlook. He explains that amateurs tend to under-club almost every approach, swinging harder to compensate. Instead, Mike recommends taking one more club than you think you need and focusing on a smooth, balanced swing. This creates better contact, consistent distance, and far less tension.
 Next, the emphasis shifts to ground contact and low-point control. Using practice swings, Mike shows how to identify where the club naturally brushes the turf. The goal is to have the club strike the ball first and the ground immediately after&mdash;an essential move for compressing the ball and controlling trajectory. He demonstrates how a slight change in ball position and posture can move the low point forward, producing pure, solid contact.
 As Jeff and Jeff work through the drill, Mike explains how to evaluate each shot on the course. After every swing, ask yourself: Where did the club brush the ground? Did it happen before or after the ball? What did solid contact feel like?This is how players learn to self-correct without overthinking mechanics.
 Mike also reinforces the &ldquo;program&ndash;execute&ndash;evaluate&ndash;fix&rdquo; process that defines every great golfer. When you hit a good shot, replay it mentally to reinforce the feel. If you hit behind the ball, make a quick correction in setup or tempo before your next swing. This mindset transforms every shot into a learning opportunity.
 By the end of the session, both players understand how to adjust ball position, choose smarter clubs, and manage contact in real conditions. A Malaska Golf member wants to know how to use the natural forces around him when he swings. When you make a golf swing, you are directing the momentum of the club, and the club just goes. It is very similar to a baseball swing.

Mike grabs a baseball bat and demonstrates. When you swing, you are getting the bat in the same arc as the ball. You let the bat go once you hit the ball. At the same time, your body pushes back away and throws the bat forward. It's the same flowing motion in the swing if you apply it to your golf swing as long as your grip is correct.

When you swing, as your body turns, the club will push out in front of you. With the correct grip, the club's momentum will square the clubface at impact. If your grip is off, something else must come into play to square the clubface.

If the grip is correct, then when you swing, it is like you are pushing the club down into impact, and then you are letting the momentum of the cub run into the ball. It will go where you want it to. When your arm straightens out and your hands pressure the shaft, it does feel free flowing, like a baseball swing. It is the same as a forehand in tennis and throwing a ball.

It must be a flow of motion and not positions. The game gets in trouble when too many positions are going on, and you don't know the motion that connects them.

Mike uses his exercise bands to perform chest openers. You can use one or two bands to perform this exercise. It is about a range of motion. People make the mistake of doing too much weight too soon.

Mike holds the band chest high and extends it outward until it touches his chest, then he maintains the stretch.

As Mike stretches the bands, he pinches his shoulder blades back. Do this exercise 8-10 times.

The retraction of the scapula is significant for the golf swing. It happens in the backswing and the follow-through.

INTRO TO FULL SWING

Mike talks about a new way to swing that he's seen in videos and discusses the idea of arms out in front of you.

Mike says it is universally understood that when you take the club away, the clubhead is in front of your hands, not behind. Most teachers in the industry are on board with this idea.

When you get to the transition point (the top of the swing), that is where there are some differing views. There is an idea out there about how the club works, and there are many ways to describe it: hub path, clubhead path, and center mass. A lot of physics is mentioned relative to forces.

One comment mentioned is that when players' arms come down from the top of the swing, they run their arms into their bodies. They explain this as getting stuck. Their solution when you change directions on the downswing is to put your arms out in front of you by dropping the club behind you. When this happens, you pull the handle down, allowing your arms to swing. Mike agrees that in this swing concept, you want room for your arms to swing; however, he wants to talk about how the body works first.

When Mike sets up, swings back, and goes down, his arms are in front of him. Mike can shallow the club and his arms in the downswing without getting stuck. His hips aren't in the way. Mike doesn't understand why people are getting stuck.

Mike explains that if your right hip is working correctly, the club will be in front of you sooner, in a better swing arc, with less manipulation and less force without the twisting from your body. Mike demonstrates what he is talking about when his hip works. He swings back, his hip moves back up to the transition point, and Mike shows you there is plenty of room for his arms to swing into the ball. Mike can shallow his arms, make a big loop and not get stuck.

Throughout his career, Jack Nicklaus talked about his swing and that his goal was to get his right hip far out of the way to get his arms back down to the ball. Tiger Woods talked about basically the same thing. Tiger wanted his right hip socket as deep as he could possibly get it, and when he came down, he wanted his left hip to do the same thing. This created a massive amount of space, offsetting the momentum of the club. Jack talked about releasing the club from the top. He was trying to get his club in the correct arc so he could push back away from it.

Mike uses the ROTEXMotion Floor Models to demonstrate how old guys like Sam Snead and Ben Hogan moved. They used to do the "sit down" position. When you swing to the top and push your hip back, it looks like you are sitting down. Mike shows you there is still plenty of room for your arms to swing down after you twist your feet.

Mike doesn't disagree that you need room for your arms to swing. But to achieve this by throwing your arms out in front of you with the club dropping back, pulling the handle, and twisting to get the club out to the ball is complicated.

Mike summarizes that working on this is about getting your right hip out of the way. The club is in front of you, and you shallow the club down, leaving plenty of room for your arms and the club to go up and come down. You don't have to swing and deal with multiple loops and forces to get the club to the ball. It's about ease of motion and consistency.

Mike says there are multiple ways to do it, and you can try that swing concept; however, he believes this is a better approach.
